Spooky Pub Night: Alaska Caving with Christian DeCelle

The grotto’s virtual Spooky Pub Night on October 27 brought us a great talk from Christian DeCelle, one of our 2020 Small Grant winners, on the discoveries and deep pits he located during Alaska caving work that summer. Christian was joined mid-presentation by USFS geologist Anna Harris, who added context on the karst country around Prince of Wales Island—some of the most productive cave terrain on the continent and a place where we’ve got real grotto history.

We hosted the night on Gather.town, which let folks mingle in a way Zoom never quite manages. The virtual room stayed open from 7 to 9 PM MT with Christian’s show-and-tell around 7:15 PM, and members were encouraged to bring costumes (and their own non-digital beverages). For anyone curious about helping on an Alaska trip, the opportunities are real—there’s more work up there than people to do it.
